How about posting a screenshot of the way PocketFMS presents this pseudo-ILS and DME?

Just noted the above request from Tim Dawson. Do you think anyone can oblige? This indicates to me that the SkyDemon Team mean business. I do not use PFMS, but would be grateful if someone could oblige.

It appears that the SD team may be wanting to work on introducing these valuable additions, perhaps soon. I wish them luck and re-iterate my offer to try the prototype.

Here is a screenshot. Basically it creates a magenta line and as you fly the line, the mile boxes vanish as you pass each point. You can add these to pretty much any runway. This is runway 7 to Blackpool that doesnt have an ILS. You just select the runway and then press another button that adds the approach line and the numbers.

I hope this helps.

Many thanks for the above depiction in Pocket FMS. Obviously there are other options. One is the addition of the Horizontal navigation in the top screen of SD and vertical navigation profile in the lower screen. A second and possibly a much better option is to fly within the centre of consecutive squares that appear in the top big screen (ala MS flight simulator). Theae squares lead you down to the runway. This will act as a guidance system for both vertical and horizontal navigation all in one screen which will simplify e-ILS flying a lot. To remain on the correct glide path, you only need to stay in the middle of these squares that will ultimately lead you down to the runway. The e-DME (from the runway threshold) can then be depicted in big semitransparent numbers below and corresponding to each e-ILS square. And Voila, eyes on one screen, the best of both worlds. SD may even be able to have a copy right to the terms E-ILS and E-DME. (Sorry Garmin I did not mean to say that you are now outdated or any thing like that..and you will be able to use the terms with permission and after paying the appropriate fee!)

I would simply prefer it to look like the current glideslope and localiser you get on standalone instruments. I'm used to that

Another excellent idea. Perhaps a reasonable size indicator, accommodated somewhere on the map screen so the map can also be seen (e.g. Semi-transparent indicator overlay) with an E-DME readout below.

I must admit, I stared at that screenshot for a minute or so and failed to understand it. Perhaps it's because I was expecting an ILS display. I'll have to look at it again in the morning.

The aircraft appears not so much to be on the approach as flying away across the sea.

Thanks for posting it, though.

It does look disjointed a bit. But I guess there is a system in this madness. The line directly out from the runway represents the localiser line (usually the same as the extended runway line as in SD map on approach). The line that goes up at an angle from the localiser line is the intercept line (currently not in SD). The angle of the latter with the former is a predetermined intercept angle. conveniently 30, 45 degrees etc. The intercept line usually points in the rough direction of the aeroplane as the programme expects the aeroplane to intercept from its current position (info obtained from the GPS Fix). A crucially needed addition is the glide slope (the extended runway centre line at say 3 degrees slope already in SD). So most of the ILS info and function is already in SD. They just need to be combined into one instrument. The E-DME reading can be depicted as a continuous reading below the instrument.

Sorry the screenshot is a bit misleading. The plane blob has nothing to do with it. Thats just where the plane was last located when I last had it on gps. It has nothing to do with the approach bit. I just selected the runway then pressed the button to make it into a letdown or whatever they call it.

You can plan a whole route and make the last bit an approach then you would see the plane going in the right direction (hopefully) and a joined up magenta line to the end of the approach. Also it takes into account terrain and airpspace when it plans you an approach.
